"Cornelius Ryckman, farmer: fl. 1795-1815; ... came to Canada in 1795 and settled near what is now St. Catharines. He later moved to what became Ryckman's Corners (near Hamilton) which had been settled by his younger brother, Samuel. Augustus Jones recorded that Ryckman was given 800 acres of land and by 1815 had cleared 45 acres."
Ref. "Dictionary of Hamilton Biography" Thomas Melville Bailey, editor, W.L. Griffin Ltd. 1981, p. 174.
"Cornelius Ryckman Sr. was probably the senior member of this family. He had been granted lands in West Lincoln (county) before 1796. On 7 July of that year ----- petition No. 71 reads:-
'Margaret Ryckman states that she is a daughter of a Loyalist and that her husband Cornelius Ryckman received two hundred acres in the 8th township, that the late Land Board granted her 100 acres family lands. She has been separated from her husband for a length of time in consequence of ill usage and now understanding that he intends to dispose of said lot, prays to have it confirmed to her and her son Cornelius C. Ryckman.' To be held over for further information.
"Margaret was the daughter of Capt. Arent Bradt, who had settled in Louth and it is probable that she and her family returned to this part of Lincoln county. Harmon Ryckman, who served with the 4th Lincoln Regiment in the War of 1812 may have been a son."
