"In 1821, John Marr brought his family to Ontario, settling on the west half of Lot 24, Concession 1, Malahide, which he purchased from Philip Matthews in October 1821. John anticipating the needs of his growing sons, he acquired in 1830, two farms from the Canada Company, which they had taken up along with several others in the neighborhood from the Crown in 1829. The first farm, 100 acres, the south half of Lot 24, Concession 2, was directly across the road from the homestead, while the second 100 acres was the north half of Lot 28, Concession 1. In November 1834, a third farm was purchased from the Canada Company, 100 acres, the south half of Lot 3, Concession 8, Malahide. John Marr died May 28, 1835 at the age of 50. It is said that his death was caused by working in icy cold water trying to salvage the cargo of a boat that had overturned in the lake."
