"Asa Marr and Hannah (Saxton) Marr settled on one of the farms his father purchased in 1830 from the Canada Company, the south half
of Lot 24, Concession 2, Malahide township.
In 1872 Asa purchased another farm, the south west part of Lot 28, Concession 2, Malahide, from Samuel Phillips, which was across the road from
his brother, John S. Marr. The large brick cottage on this property is believed to have been built not long after 1850 for Samuel Phillips. At that
time Mr. Philips was a prosperous business man, having interests in both flour and saw mills at what is known at the present time as Stalter
Gulley. The bricks for the house were made in the field across the road from the building site, probably by an Englishman named Richard
Muscutt, a brick-maker, who lived in the neighborhood. The massive stone window and door sills were brought across the lake by boat from
Ohio. A skilled cabinet-maker, Seth Westover, who lived by the creek, no doubt built the beautiful fire-place mantle as well as the interior
finishing. Yet few people today realize the quality of the material and the workmanship which went into the building of the fine old house."
